This great
temple group is finely describe in ‘SHIV Puran’-Baman puran,

Jageshwar,*
the great abode of god,* is situated in Uttaranchal to the
north-east to Almora town at the distance of 36 Km. It is at
the altitude of 1870 mtrs. from the see level. Jageshwar
pilgrim is surrounded by beautiful deodar-forest having
magnificent beauty. cool breeze blowing through its branches
seems as if it is praying god by Chawar (fan) of swinging
branches .
Jageshwar
is the biggest group of temple in this Himalayan region of
kumaun. Its recognition is since ancient Guptamregme e. g.

Mirtunjay
in this Devak Van-Manas Khand; king Ravan worshiping in
this Devak Van-Wayu Puran; coming of Arjun to Jageshwar

When
pandavs were exiled (at the time of agyat-was) the come to
Jageshwar and god Jagnath (Shiva) allowed them to stay
safely in the famous cave of Patal Bhuwaneshwar. According
to the ancient belief and achievements, God is worshiped
here as birth giver with the expectation of giving birth to
a child, issueless – men and women keep oil burring clay
lamp (Deepak) in there hands on pious occasions at
Mahamirtunjaya mandap women keep Vermilleonanad veil having
full srinagar (makeup); keeping in there clean hearts the
desire giving birth to there children (getting children )
worship the
hole night from the sun set-to sunrise and surely blessed by
the god get children when Gupt. Regime was in north. Kumaun

.this depicts the glimplse of gupta.regimie Indian
archaeological survey has divided this in to three periods
(ages)- pre-katyuri period, post katyuri period and Chandra
period . these encourageous kings of kumoon have constructed
about 400 temples in almora district, out of them 200 big
and small temples are around in jageshwar. ‘ the biggest
temple group is with 124th. temples’

and art of these temple is also ever attractive like the
greatness of Jyotiling jagnath shiva (in
India the 8th
jyotirlingas is known as nagesh)
jageshwar temples
are made of big stone slabs in place of wood and sement. (chaukhtats)
of the doors are made with single stone slabs and carved
with attractive pictures of god and goddesses special type
of stone was brought and iron was mined from the
neighbouring mines to join these slabs .roof of these
temples are made of holi devdar wood and copper sheets mined
from the neighbouring places. architects used special
local see on the idols of the temple of pushti mata, kuber
etc.
Jageshwar
is described in purans as hat keshwar yageshwar yagesh
darukavan or nagesh .it is said that adi guru sankaracharya
came hear in 8th century and purified these
temples.one south India Brahmin of bhatt (batuk) caste came
whit him. Guru handed over the work of ‘puja-path’of these
temples to that Brahmin. After some time he was married to a
local Brahmin. Later on his bhatt (batuk) sons, grand-sons
in purans as hatkeshwar and in revenue records as patti
